The family is forced to move to [the state of] Alagoas after a warrant goes out for José Oiticica’s arrest, accusing him of conspiring to organize a labor riot in Rio de Janeiro. Because of Francisco de Paula Leite e Oiticica’s (1853-1927) status as senator, he is granted the privilege of house arrest at the Engenho Riachão in Rio Largo, Alagoas, where the family remains for a year.
